9 Days Suriname – Upper Suriname

Starting at $ 1160.00

The Upper Suriname River is truly fascinating; stretching south into the Amazon Rain forest, the Upper Suriname is home to twenty-three villages settled in the 17th and 19th centuries by slaves escaping from the Dutch plantations. Today life still reflects Africa of the period, and our tour will introduce to you a timeless way of life that is slowly disappearing. Truly a memorable destination.

Day 1: Arrival in Suriname

You will be picked up at the airport and be transferred to the Bergendal River Resort for a two-night stay in the rainforest.

Day 2: Acclimatizing at Bergendal Resort

Bergendal Resort is the best place to rest after your journey, acclimatize to the rainforest and get used to life in the tropics. The lodge has a fine river view, jungle walks and a swimming pool. There are several activities you can undertake.

Day 3: Into the Jungle

We head south today to Atjoni, where the road stops and we continue our journey in a dugout canoe on the river. This is the main mode of transportation in Upper Suriname. As we travel south, we will pass various Saramaccan villages and see their traditional ways of living. The people living here are descendants of runaway slaves and have preserved much of their way of living. You will be amazed by the peacefulness and beauty of the rainforest while we continue the river. We will check in at the lodge and explore the grounds in the afternoon.

Day 4-6: Enjoying Upper Suriname

The lodge will have several activities organized. You will have the opportunity to visit local villages and talk to them about their history and contemporary life in the Amazon rain forest. On a jungle walk you will be introduced to the wide range of medicinal plants that grow and to the animal and bird life of the forest. If you like, there is an option to spend a night in the jungle or travel further south to the village of Dangogo, which is the last village along the river, and stay overnight in the community. It will be a fascinating and unique experience.

Day 7: Return to the City

In the late morning, we will return by dugout canoe to Atjoni and continue our journey to Paramaribo, the capital city of Suriname. You will be dropped off at your hotel.

Day 8: Paramaribo City Tour

Today, we will show you the distinctive wooden houses of the central Paramaribo during a city tour. It is a delightful and unique place, and exploring the Waterkant and the surrounding streets will be sure to make you smile. We will visit several UNESCO heritage sites and in the afternoon, we will cross the river and visit the old Dutch fort of Nieuw Amsterdam, which is now an open-air museum.
