Day 9-11: Maroon Culture in the Suriname Rainforest
We will head south to the Upper Suriname River. The river is home to twenty-three Saramaccan communities, founded by the descendants of slaves, who fled their capture in the 17th and 18th centuries. These communities have preserved their cultural heritage to an amazing extend. It almost looks like you have entered West-Africa in the Amazon. There are two options you can choose from when it comes to spending your days in this region. You can either spend it with the Saramaccan community of Jaw Jaw and be introduced to a very different way of life. You will be engaged in all community activities. The facilities of the camp are basic, but it will be a great cultural experience. The other option is experiencing Upper Suriname from a jungle lodge.
