10 Days Suriname – The People of the Rainforest
Starting at $ 1417.00
Community-based tourism is an important part of the economic and social life of many villages along the Suriname river. This trip will bring you into close contact with life in Upper Suriname. This is a very special experience for anyone with a fascination about life in indigenous communities as you will spend several days in one particular Saramaccan community on the Suriname river, called Jaw Jaw.
Day 1: Arrival in Suriname
Today, you will arrive in Paramaribo. You will be picked up at the airport and transferred to your hotel in Paramaribo.
Day 2: Paramaribo City Tour
In the morning, you have time to spend on your own. In the afternoon, we will take you on a city tour through the historical center of Paramaribo. We will visit several UNSECO heritage sites, like the independence square, Fort Zeelandia and the Palm Garden. We will also show you around the market and you will get a good feeling of the unique atmosphere of the city.
Day 3: Visit to Historical Plantation Bakkie
Today, we will go on to the Commewijne River and go to the old restored plantation of Bakkie. This beautifully restored, but simple plantation offers its guests a good insight to life here a few hundred years ago. There is a museum and several buildings that have been rescued from being reclaimed by the forest, a small restaurant and the delightful company of the owners.
Day 4: Bakkie and Paramaribo
You will have the morning to enjoy the plantation and the area before we return to Paramaribo in the afternoon.
Day 5-8: Maroon Cultuur in the Rainforst at Jaw Jaw
This morning you will be driven to Atjoni, and from there taken by dugout canoe to the Saramaccan Jaw Jaw. For the next few days, you will live a village life and be able to participate in the daily events of the community. You will be introduced to the ancient culture of the people, much brought from Africa by slaves in the 17th century. You will have a chance to learn about the traditional uses of the forest, engage with the local people and begin to understand the delicacy of this disappearing life. You can enjoy swimming, biking, hiking or simply listening to the people. Your accommodation will simple cabins, food will be, as far as possible, from the village’s own harvest, and the washing facilities are simple but clean.
